I'm being harassed on Kik! What can I do?

We take the safety of our users very seriously and definitely don't condone this type of behavior (which unfortunately is a risk with any kind of communication platform). Here are some steps you can take:

What you can do immediately:
Blocking the unwanted user will:
  1. prevent them from sending any messages to you,
  2. prevent them from adding you to a group chat,
  3. remove all chats with the unwanted user from your phone, and
  4. remove the unwanted user from your contact list.

The ‘New Chats’ feature on iOS and Android devices puts messages from people you haven't talked to before in a separate section, and provides the option to mute notifications for those messages. If you don't want to see inbound messages from people you don’t know, you don’t have to.

If you choose to open the chat in your 'New Chats' list, any content messages (like pictures, GIFs, etc.) will be blurred, and a read receipt won't be sent. This means that the person messaging you won't know you've seen the message unless you tap Chat to start chatting.

When you report a user within the Kik app, you have the option to include your chat history with that person.

You can report a user by following these steps with messages from them in the chat:
  1. In the chat, tap their profile picture beside their message

Without messages from the person in the chat:

  1. In the chat, tap the Display Name > at the top
  2. Tap the three vertical dots icon in the top right corner of the Info screen

Then:

  1. Tap Report User
  2. Choose from the following:
    1. I don’t want to talk to them
    2. This is a spam bot
    3. This person is being abusive.
  3. You can check off/on the option to include the chat history in your report
  4. Tap Report and Block

I don’t want to talk to them: you would report a user for this in instances where you're receiving unsolicited or unwanted messages from the user.

This is a spam bot: you would report a user for this in instances where you're being contacted by a spam bot.

This person is being abusive: you would report a user for this in instances where you're receiving abusive or harassing messages from a user.

Once you report the user you’ll have the option to keep or remove the chat from your conversation list. If you choose to keep the chat, this will automatically block the user from your Kik account but save the chat history with them in your conversation list. If you choose to remove the chat, this will automatically block the user from your Kik account and remove your chat history with them.

NOTE: When you report with your chat history, it doesn't send us a copy of any of your other chats, and it doesn't give us access to your account. Your reported chat history is stored only for us to investigate the report and take action when we believe it's appropriate (in some cases, this may include reporting to law enforcement agencies).

If you've received unwanted messages in a group, you have the option to ‘Report’ either: specific users within the group or the group as a whole. Similar to reporting a user in a one-to-one chat, you’ll also have the option to include the group’s chat history.

You can report a specific user within a group by following these steps:

  1. In the group chat, tap the profile picture of the user sending these unwanted messages
  2. Tap the three vertical dots icon in the top right corner of their Profile screen
  3. Tap Report
  4. Choose from the following:
    1. I don’t want to be in this group
    2. They’re spamming this group
    3. They’re using this group for abuse
  5. You can check off/on the option to include the chat history in your report
  6. Tap Report and Block

I don’t want to be in this group: you would report a group for this in instances where you no longer want to be part of a group.

They're spamming this group: you would report a user for this in instances where they're spamming your group chat with spam links/spam bots.

They're using this group for abuse: you would report a user for this in instances where you're receiving abusive or harassing messages from the user within the group.

You can report the entire group by following these steps:

  1. In the group chat, tap the Group Name > at the top
  2. Tap the three vertical dots icon in the top right corner of the Info screen
  3. Tap Report Group
  4. Choose from the following:
    1. I don’t want to be in this group
    2. This group is offensive
    3. This group is being used for abuse
  5. You can check off/on the option to include the chat history in your report
  6. Tap Report

I don’t want to be in this group: you would report a group for this in instances where you no longer want to be part of a group.

This group is offensive: you would report a group for this in instances where the group members are being offensive (i.e racist, sexist, cyber bullying, homophobia, etc).

This group is being used for abuse: you would report a group for this in instances where it’s being used to harm other group members, or is distributing inappropriate content.

What you can do to help us address the situation:

Please contact your local law enforcement agency and report the inappropriate incident(s), if you haven't already done so, and ask them to send an email to lawenforcement@kik.com with the subject line "Law Enforcement Inquiry" for more information on obtaining user information from Kik. Kik will work with law enforcement where appropriate and to the extent required by law to ensure the safety of all our Kik users.
